THE VISTA HOUSE INTERIOR LIFT
(Source:  OPRD)
…….

A one-of-a-kind custom-designed lift, in keeping with the historic architecture of Vista House, has made the lift1building fully accessible, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
…….
Completed in May, 2006, the lift has enabled people with mobility-related disabilities to access restrooms, view historic photo exhibits and visit the Friends of Vista House museum gift store and espresso in the building’s lower level.
…….

The lift is designed to blend in the with the building’s architectural characteristics to the point of being inconspicuous.  A section of the marble flooring in the rotunda was cut to accommodate the lift’s 5-foot-4-inch by 5-foot-3-inch shaft and rests atop the lift.  It serves as the rotunda flooring when the lift is not in use or when it’s in use and lowered to the building’s lower level.  When visible, the lift has a sleek, elegantly designed appearance, enclosed by glass on two sides and equipped with brass accessories and finishings.

The lift is operated by Friends of Vista House volunteers on an as-needed/requested basis.  To date, thousands of visitors have been able to access the building’s lower level who never before would have been able to fully enjoy the building or take advantage of one of its original purposes – the restrooms!
